functionalism : 1. (in sociology) a view that society is like a complex machine or living organism and the parts of it can be understood only within the whole.

2. (in philosophy of mind) a view that mental processes are characterized in terms of their abstract functional relationships to one another, and to sensory inputs and motor outputs

3. (in archiecture) a movement that advocates that the form a building sholud come out from the function it has. The well known phrase "form follows function" which is popularized by Louis Sullivan, points out this idea.

4. (in linguistics) function based approach to the scientific study of language

5. (in psychology) the school of psychology concerned with how behavior and mental abilities help people adapt to their environment.
